Making pizza!

by Vicky

Pizza is a big favourite in our house. If the boys had it their way we’d be eating it every day. We often make our own pizza from scratch, including the dough. My husband has perfected his dough technique using a great recipe we found on A Peek Inside the Fishbowl.

Whenever we do make home made pizza, I give Joel his very own mini pizza to decorate. I put all the ingredients in small bowls and let him decide what he wants on it. It’s a great activity which gets him involved in cooking without a lot of the mess. He’s always eager to eat a meal he helped prepare!

Do your kids help you make pizza?

  1. the jellybean would eat pizza 24/7 if we let him! we often make our own, though never attempted the dough. i usally buy the frozen dough balls. maybe one day i’ll feel brave enough!

  2. I have fond memories of making mini pizza’s with english muffins as a kid. My mom would set out bowls of toppings and we would make an assembly line cretaing our personal little pizza’s. It made for a fun birthday party activity too!

  3. Make-yer-own-pizza-nite is one of our top family meals. I serve them with a side salad and we get five clean plates with (gasp!) no complaints.

We’ve recently discovered that naan bread makes the best! pizza! crust! ever! It’s a little bigger than the pitas we were using, so I cut them in half when they come out of the oven and serve half for dinner and keep half for lunch at school the next day.

  4. We do the english-muffin pizzas when the cousins are visiting. It’s a very popular meal!

  5. We make pizzas all the time – it can be a really healthy lunch or snack and a great way to use up leftovers. I make my own whole wheat dough, and I keep some whole wheat english muffins in the freezer for a quick lunch.

And smothermother, don’t be afraid of pizza dough, it is really easy to make. I make a double batch that does 4 pizzas, and it freezes really well. It takes very little time and is really easy.

My kids also LOVE spaghetti pizza, which is another great way to use up leftovers. It’s nutritious and the kids think it’s a treat

  6. I also LOVE making home made pizza. I make my own dough using my kitchenaid mixer to do all the work and it is soooo easy. And there was a Kids in the Capital post in the early days about par baking the crusts (with a recipe included). I have yet to try that, but I plan on it.

  7. I just made this dough from scratch yesterday, and it was really really good! I used toppings that were in the fridge(cheese, pepperoni, tomatoes and olives), and dear son inhaled! I will be making more scratch dough with various flours to experiment in the future. Thanks!!
