Social Media Monday: Ottawa tweets

by Brie

I often find myself wondering how people got their news before the Internet. Oh, I know, the radio and newspapers provide up to date and in depth news. But before I check either of those I always check the Internet. More specifically Twitter.

Twitter is how I found out it was a snow day in Ottawa and the buses weren’t running. I was reminded on Twitter (oops) that it was actually a PD day. Twitter is very, very useful in my life.

Here are some useful people to follow on Twitter if you want to keep up with family events and news around Ottawa:

@ottawastart shares events and happenings around Ottawa, many of them family friendly. @missfish and @danigirl also do a great job of sharing Ottawa events for families.

Keep up to date with everything happening at all the great museums in Ottawa by following @Civilization, @CanWarMuseum, @MuseumofNature, @scitechmuseum and @AgMuseum. And at this time of year it is a smart idea to be following @winterlude.

For information you may want to know about your kids schools, follow @OCDSB or the @OttCatholicDSB.  And for updates about events or issues related to the city, follow @ottawacity or @ottawahealth, which was useful in keeping up with flu wait times back in the Fall of 2009.

And last, but not least, you can follow us at @kidsincapital!

What or who are your favorite Ottawa Twitter accounts to follow for family or kid related updates and news in the city?

  1. I find that following a ton of Ottawa people is a great way to keep on top of what is happening. I have a twitter list of Ottawa parents. I try to follow as many Ottawa parents as possible and add them to my list as I follow them.

Here is a link to the list, which other people can follow too:!/phdinparenting/ottawa-parents

If you should be on the list and are not, please @ me on twitter and I’ll be glad to add you! :)

  2. I follow the hashtag #ottcity for news updates on interesting things happening in the city. I’ve found a lot of journalists also use this tag, so you can see what sorts of things they might be covering. Great post Brie!

  3. There is so much great free stuff hapenning in this city! I’m on twitter @frugalfunottawa and list free and frugal Ottawa events and activities.

  4. Aww, thanks for the shout-out! I was wondering why I got a whack of new followers yesterday — *grin*! I follow this great Kids in the Capital blog — oh wait, you know about that one. ;) You should put your twitter account in the body of the article, in case any of your blog readers aren’t already following you.

I also like @Ottawa_Tourism for local events and info, and @ottawastart has three or four different accounts all worth following. And I love Ian Black’s weather updates! @BlacksWeather

  5. Thank you from me as well! I have a passion for writing about the best of Ottawa for parents and kids (just like you … although mine are older now)! There are so many hidden little gems that deserve to be shared. I am also based in Westboro so I tweet out a lot about that. Speaking of which I follow @kitchissippikid because she’s in my neighborhood!

  6. Great post – thank you for mentioning @ottawastart
I was going to suggest @kitchissippikid as well but Andrea beat me to it!
